At the beginning of the stay-at-home order, my daughter returned home from college ... SICK. Kenna had been at the doctor's three times since January battling bronchitis and sinus infections. After three months and three rounds of medication, she was still not herself. She sounded stuffy, had pretty regular headaches, and could not stop coughing. After a virtual call with a new doctor, who looked at her and said he could see right away telltale signs of allergies, Kenna was prescribed a number of medications to help her deal with these allergies until she could undergo allergy testing in the future when there was no longer a COVID-19 pandemic.
As we headed out to pick up her medication, disinfectant wipes in hand (at that time unsure whether to wear a mask or not ... now we wear them), I realized how we'd recognized and shown gratitude for frontline workers — doctors, nurses, police officers, etc., but our family had forgotten to thank other essential workers in our community who continue to put themselves at risk to ensure our families' needs are still met. Our family is widely dependent on local pharmacists and technicians as each of us now has daily medications that we cannot do without and we hadn't thought to thank them. We hadn't thanked the grocery cashiers or the owner of the local market for staying open. We hadn't thanked the local restaurants for cooking dinners for us when we ran out of creative ideas or just needed a night off. And there are so many more people out there that need to be acknowledged for all they are doing during these uncertain times, and who's thanking them?
So my family decided to do something about that. We spent some time this week working on a project to help thank our local Walgreens employees for continuing to go to work so that our local stores remain open and we can continue to take care of our families.
- The pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who are still filling our prescriptions.
- The warehouse employees and delivery teams who are making sure our local shelves are stocked.
- The cashiers and managers who are still helping us find everything we need.
- And the entire Walgreens team for working tirelessly to keep our local stores open.
Whether we need to buy a gallon of milk, toiletries, pain reliever or some sweet treats for the kids needed (there is a little cotton-tailed bunny out there delivering candy this weekend who might need to stock up) or fill a prescription, Walgreens can help.
So if you haven't taken the time to think about those who are still working to ensure all your needs are met, take a moment, make a list, and maybe send them a thank you — a card, a gift certificate, a shoutout on social media, or just a simple text. And if you know someone who is working at one of our local Walgreens, please tell them "Thank You," from all of us here at Macaroni Kid!
