The Batavia community will soon be able to visit and enjoy two new neighborhood parks as Batavia Park District is hosting two park dedications on Aug. 24.
Peter Frieders Park on the east side of Batavia, and Coventry Park on the west side, have been developed as passive green spaces in their respective neighborhoods. Each park offers an open space for individuals and families to walk their dog, enjoy a picnic or even throw around a football.
On Aug. 24, the Peter Frieders Park dedication will be at 10 a.m. Coventry Park will be dedicated at 11 a.m. Each dedication will involve a ribbon cutting and an opportunity to explore the green space. The public is invited to attend.
“Each of these parks are wonderful additions to Batavia’s park system,” said Kim Hansen, Batavia Park District Director of Parks. “They will provide great spaces for friends and families to gather and play as parks are an important tool in facilitating a connection with individuals and nature.”
Additionally, Peter Frieders Park offers an important connection to Batavia history, Hansen noted. The park is named for the man who purchased and farmed the land with his family in the late 1860s. The park now occupies that parcel of land, which has largely stayed intact through the 20th century. “After careful consideration of other ideas for the park’s name, the Batavia Park Board decided on Peter Frieders to pay homage to the unique history of the land,” Hansen said.
While both Peter Frieders and Coventry Park are currently passive green spaces, there is an opportunity for amenities to be added to each park in the future. However, for now, they will be dedicated as great new additions to Batavia’s large park system.
